How we order listings, and what we get paid for
The short version: a registration that has expired sorts last, everything else is alphabetical, nothing on this site can be bought into a better licence status, and at the moment nobody is paying us anything at all.
How we order listings
Nobody pays for placement on this site, and there are no sponsored listings anywhere on it. We intend to offer paid placement in future, because it is how the site will pay for itself. When we do, every paid listing will be clearly labelled, will sit in a visually separate block, and this page will say so before the first one appears.
- A current registration firstA registration that has expired sorts below one that has not. That is the only quality-like judgement in the order, and it is a fact from the register rather than an opinion of ours.
- Then alphabeticallyEvery registered business we hold for that place or category, in name order. It is arbitrary, but it is consistent, it does not change between visits, and it is not for sale.
- Nothing is removed for commercial reasonsA firm that does not pay us appears in exactly the same list, with exactly the same licence treatment. A firm that complains about us does too.
What does not affect the order
- Whether a business has claimed its listing
- Whether it has given us contact details, a website or a description
- Whether it subscribes to anything we offer
- Whether it has complained to us
- How old the business is, or how large
Where our data comes from
Every licence fact comes from the Environment Agency's public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers. We read it daily, store what it says, and show the date we read it on every page that carries a fact from it.

What the register tells you — and what it does not
It does tell you
- That the business is registered to transport waste
- Which tier the registration sits in
- When the registration expires
- Which waste categories it covers
- The date we last read the register
It does not tell you
- That the work will be done well
- That the price is fair
- That we have met, checked or approved the firm
- That anyone has inspected their vehicles or staff
- Anything about complaints, insurance or disputes
